Deeside U16s recorded their first loss this season to a tenacious Wanderers side 27-12, away at Groats Road in the U16 North Premier League encounter.
Deeside started well, but Wanderers played a good kicking game and on their first trip to Deeside’s 22, Deeside were penalised right in front of the posts for side entry at the ruck and Wanderer’s fly half Ross Findlay duly slotted the first points of the game.
Cleverly placed kicks from the Wanderers 10 kept the game in Deeside’s half for long periods and Wanderers capitalised on some uncharacteristic Deeside mistakes in defence, which resulted in two easy tries for Wanderers.
Deeside scored next with some great inter-passing in a move started and finished by No 8 Matthew Gordon and it looked like the game might turn. Wanderers however, had the last points of the half with a try.
The second half was a tighter game, and thoughts of a Deeside comeback were kindled when Tswai Mweemba scored off a pass from Matthew Gordon who had repeatedly threatened with breaks off the back of the scrum.
However thought of a comeback were soon thwarted when Deeside were penalised for handling at the ruck. Wanderers kicked for touch and scored their best try of the game, from a set move at the resulting lineout.
Deeside never really recovered from the quick trio of early Wanderers tries and their patterns of play were disrupted as they tried to deal with a very scrappy loose game.
Deeside’s next league fixture is at Moray this Sunday with a 1pm kick off. Deeside: Welsh, Long, Hutcheon, Harle, Mweemba, Gordon, M.Hillier, Booth, Fyfe, Sutton, Hough, Taylor, Wood, Gordon, Sutton, Hardman, Lamont, J.Hillier, Sutcliffe.
