A Team from Durris Primary Schools head to Perth on the June 1 to compete for the National Badminton Sports Hall Challenge title.

Over 80 young people from primary schools across the south of Aberdeenshire took part in the regional final on May 6th at Banchory Sports Centre having qualified through their local cluster events.

The event, part of a national initiative from Badmintonscotland, is being rolled out by Aberdeenshire Council’s Badminton Development Officer in collaboration with South Aberdeenshire Active Schools Co-ordinators.

Joan Prieur Badminton Development Officer said: “Over 260 Aberdeenshire pupils from Aboyne, Banchory, Mearns and Stonehaven Networks have been introduced to the sport of badminton in a fun way taking part in sessions in their local area clusters. Eight teams progressed from the area cluster events to the regional final with the winning two teams going forward to represent Aberdeenshire at the National Finals.”

The primary 3 – 5 pupils in teams comprising of 5 boys and 5 girls had great fun as they raised the roof of the sports centre cheering on their team mates as Doreen Seery, Aberdeenshire badminton coach and Active School Coordinator, orchestrated the day.

This will be the first time a Durris team has ever reached this stage of the competition.

Class teacher Lynda Leslie who accompanied the Durris pupils at the regional final said: “The school took part last year as well but we didn’t get past the initial stages. We’re all excited about the nationals and very proud of the pupils. It’s a rural school, so it is great that they’ve made it so far in the competition.”

Head Teacher Carol Reilly said: “We’re just delighted we’ve done so well. I think it is an excellent idea, and since we began the session you can see how the children have progressed in developing their skills. They thoroughly enjoy it as it’s a fun-focused way to learn. The pupils are very enthusiastic about it.”
