Echt hit for six by Sportsmans

This, the first of the end of season night matches was switched from Hazlehead to Aulton, with a covering of snow still affecting the original venue.

The hosts having suffered a 5-1 home cup defeat from Echt a month ago, started this league fixture in determined fashion and should of gone ahead in 11 minutes when frontmen McNamara and McKenzie carved open the Echt rearguard but the latter fired wide.

Little was being seen of Echt as an attacking force and Sportmans deservedly went ahead in 25 minutes when dangerman McKenzie escaped both Alan Daun and Alan Douglas on the edge of the Echt box and advanced to fire an assured finish inside Lewis Milne’s left hand post.

As the homesters continued to call the shots a Law drive from distance brought out a fine diving stop from Milne.

Echt conceded a second in 35 minutes, Ewen beating Lewis at his near post with a well struck free kick from 30 yards.

Things got even worse for Echt minutes later when keeper Milne came off his line, and a fresh air attempted clearance allowed a home player to make absolutely sure on the goal-line for 3-0.

An Echt charge was expected after their half time pep talk but it was Sportsmans defender Buchanan who came upfield to power a headed effort, on a corner, narrowly over early on.

Echt continued to play second fiddle to a rampant home side who not surprisingly netted their fourth goal in 65 minutes. McNamara was left to net with ease following an attacking move that saw five Sportsmans players in the Echt box and only three Echt defenders.

Echt withdrew Martin McGillivray and Marc Lawrence came on but the homesters went nap in 73 minutes with great build up play left side and a penalty box finish across Milne into the far corner of the net.

Joe Kirton and Evan Robertson replaced Stuart Cooper and Duncan Chalmers but home substitute Heads netted an 88th minute effort which went in between Milne and his left hand post for 6-0.

Matthew McDonald got Echt’s consolation counter on the 90th minute.
