Honours even!

Echt hosted Mearns Utd in this Premier Division league fixture, mindful that the visitors had inflicted a 5-3 league defeat on them earlier in the season.

An early piece of action for Bennett in the home goal when a Mearns strike on goal took a wicked deflection off Graham but the keeper acrobatically brought off a fine save.

Echt shaded the early possession but the match was developing into a competitive clash all over the park.

When a Lawrence pass picked out McGillivray in 22 minutes the midfielder drove forward to try his luck from 30 yards but his strike was just too high.

A diagonal left to right ball from Leith sent Lawrence scurrying down the right and his delivery across goal was agonisingly just above the head of the inrushing Chalmers.

Echt however were not to be denied and on the half hour mark Graham’s free kick delivery was knocked back across goal by Aberdein and Chalmers nodded into the roof of the net.

Stung by this reversal former Echt player Marten Day, now in Mearns colours, flashed a 45 yard effort narrowly wide.

Two minutes after the Echt opener the visitors levelled. Day threaded a delightful through ball inside Graham, allowing Irvine a free run into the box to round Bennett and roll home from an angle.

In 38 minutes Aberdein and Wood combined for the latter to bring out an instinctive block stop from visiting custodian Black.

At the other end the livewire Irvine had Bennett at full stretch to push an 18yd drive round a post.

In 44 minutes Cooper sent Leith down the left to cut in near the byeline and roll an inviting grounder across goal, Chalmers dummied, allowing Lawrence to stroke home for 2-1.

Echt’s lead, as in the case of the first goal, was shortlived as within 60 seconds an Irvine left side cross was bulleted past Bennett from the head of Legg.

Echt took the lead for a third time in 55 minutes following a, surging run from Douglas who found his path to goal blocked but laid off to Leith who cut across his marker to clinically roll the ball home between Black and his right hand post from 16yds.

Chalmers had a great chance to increase the Echt advantage in 62 minutes, free inside the Mearns box he fired across Black but also wide of far post.

Aberdein was uncharacteristically sent off in 66 minutes following a difference of opinion with the referee, leaving his colleagues the final quarter of the match to protect their one goal advantage.

It took the visitors a mere five minutes to level for the third time and a messy equaliser it was from Echt’s perspective. Full back Henderson lifted a left touchline free into the edge of the Echt 6yd line, one bounce and it ended in the far corner of the Echt net.

Both sides pulled out all the stops to grab a winner and indeed 10 man Echt went agonisingly close as Leith’s strike hit the bar, but over the piece a share of the spoils was about right.
