Kathryn is award winner

Finzean sprinter Kathryn Christie was named as the young female sports personality of the year at the Aberdeenshire Sports Council Sports Awards evening which was held in Inverurie last Friday.

The Aboyne Academy pupil was awarded the honour ahead of Banchory orienteering member Rhona McMillan, who was highly commended.

Last month Kathryn took the 60m gold medal at the Scottish Schools Indoor Athletic Championships before winning again at the Scottish Indoor National Championships in a time that equalled her personal best and club record of 7.77s.

Banchory golfer James Byrne, who was a member of the victorious Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team last September, narrowly missed out on the sports personality of the year award which went to showjumper Lucy Guild.

Garioch Gymnastics club was named club of the year ahead of Mar Orienteering Club and Banchory Boys FC were highly commended in the team of the year category.

Team of the Year Award - Ellon U16 Rugby Club- Ellon. Banchory Boys FC- Banchory (highly commended)

Club of the Year Award - Garioch Gymnastics Club-Inverurie. MAR Orienteering Club- Aboyne (highly commended)

Service To Sport Award - Colin Allanach-Ellon Ythan Cycling Club. Silvanna Matheson Portsoy- Skip to the Beat (highly commended)

Outstanding Achievement Award - Dean Sutherland- Cove Bay- Saltire Tae Kwon Do. Aaron Clark- Drumblade Gordon Riding for the Disabled (highly commended)

Sports Personality of the Year Award - Lucy Guild-Fraserburgh Show jumping. James Byrne-Banchory Golf (highly commended)

Active Schools Volunteer of the Year Award - Amanda Conn Huntly- Primary Teacher. Pat Cosgrove- Basketball Stonehaven.
