A keen Deeside swimmer is going for gold after being selected to compete with the Scottish Commonwealth Games Aquatics team.

Rachel Masson, 18, from Balmoral, is one of forty young people from across the country to be chosen to swim in the Team Scotland Aquatics Team.

Glasgow is set to host the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games on 23 July, which is also Rachel’s 19th birthday.

Rachel has been chosen to compete in the 4x100 freestyle relay at the Glasgow Games.

She is no the only local swimmer to have seen success in recent weeks. The girls from South Aberdeenshire Swimming (SAS) have done very well so far this year.

Meghan Feld of the Banchory Beavers Platinum Squad won Gold in April at the Scottish National Open Swimming Championships.

Held between 3-6 April, at the forthcoming Commonwealth Pool venue in Tollcross Glasgow, the championships attracted Scotland’s fastest swimmers. Many of those competing in the event had their eye on selection for the Commonwealth team.

At the Open Swimming Championships last month, the SAS team clocked an impressive time of 3 mins 54.53s. This secured them the Gold Medal and was faster than the nomination time for the Commonwealth Games.

Rachel also competed at the Westhill Invitational Meet, which celebrated its 20th anniversary at the new Aquatics Centre in Aberdeen last weekend.
