Bert is still a sharp shooter at the age of 87

Two members of the Banchory Rifle Club attended the National Smallbore Rifle Association Scottish meeting which was held at Castletown, Caithness.

Bert Mackie, 87, was presented with a certificate and medal on what was his 50th consecutive appearance at the Scottish meeting. Bert also won two of the ‘any sights’ competitions with club secretary, Maureen Duncan, finishing a commendable fourth in one of the competitions.

Bert has been shooting for 70 years and he says it is a sport that can appeal to all ages.

“It is something you can do no matter what age you are,” he said. “Although I must admit that I’m not as good as I used to be!

“I first got started during the Second World War when I competed in the Services league over the winter of 1941 and I finished with the top score.

“I had two spells with the Portlethen club when I stayed in Aberdeen. I was also a member of the Dunecht club before I moved out to Banchory in 1986.”

Bert admits that the sport is not very popular at the moment but he thinks there may be misconceptions about target shooting.

“A lot of people don’t realise that we only shoot at paper. We have an open day at Crathes in August and I would encourage anyone interested to come along and see what it is like.

“I have made so many good friends through the sport over the years.”
