Morven hill runners feel the pace
THE Morven Hill Race 2008 was run in warm conditions last Saturday with a strong headwind at the top and at exposed locations.
The senior race over 8km and with 640m of vertical ascent had 44 finishers.
Graeme Bartlett of Forres Harriers who is also a Veteran, and posted a time of 47 minutes and 23 seconds quickly established a clear lead over Simon Peachy of Carnethy who finished in 49minutes and 33 seconds.
First Male over 50 was Paul Duley of Grampian Orienteers and first over 60 was Charlie Love of Dundee Hawkhill Hillrunners.
Ruth MacKenzie from Tarland and a member of Deeside Runners was the first female finisher in a time of 61 minutes and 8 seconds.
First female over 50 was Gillian Clunas of Cosmic Hillbashers. The team prize was taken by Cosmic Hillbashers for the men, and Deeside Runners for women.
In the Half Morven Race over 4km and 380metres climb, this year's winner was Andrew Melvin of Banchory Stonehaven AC. Andrew, in the U14 age group took a mere 33 minutes and 46 seconds for the course and was ahead of most of the field when returning to the finish from the half-way point. The record set last year by club mate Robbie Simpson U18 in more favourable conditions; is 27minutes 28seconds. 1st Junior Female was Jenny Martin from Deeside Runners.
The U12 and U14 categories tackled the "Mini Morven"; some 1.8km with 108metres climb. This exciting race, with its slippery descent saw Hamish Battle of Craigievar winning in a new course record of 8 minutes and 55 seconds. The first girl home was Josephine McLeod of Insch; her time being 13 minutes and 36 seconds.
