New race added to Balmoral event

A new event has been added to the hugely popular RunBalmoral programme to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.

The new TAQA Bratani mile, which is open to runners of all ages, is to be held along with the Petrofac Challenge 15 mile run on Sunday 29th April. Hundreds of people are expected to take part in what promises to be another great running occasion.

Many of Scotland’s top distance runners will take part in the two-day RunBalmoral meeting which also features the Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km and the ConocoPhillips 5Km races for adults, as well as the Kongsberg Maritime secondary schools 2.5Km and the MPH primary schools 1.5Km  runs on Saturday 28th April.

RunBalmoral Chairman James Knowles is excited about the mile.

He said: “This new event will really enhance the experience of the Sunday at RunBalmoral and TAQA’s sponsorship of the Diamond Jubilee Mile is extremely welcome.

“We hope that the family and friends of the runners will take some time out from the fringe entertainments on the event field to test themselves against the one mile course and in doing so raise lots of money for GASTROCAN, this year’s nominated charity.”

Chris Dunridge, HR Manager at TAQA Bratani said: “Supporting sports related activities is very positive both for our community and also for our employees, especially when it gives them an opportunity to participate themselves.

“We are pleased to be sponsoring the Diamond Jubilee Mile, in which everyone can take part.”

Scottish junior triathlon champion Lewis Murchie, from Westhill, is one of the first athletes to pledge his support for the new event.

He said: “I will be competing in the biggest race of my career so far the week before when I represent Great Britain in the European triathlon age group championships at Eilat, Israel. But I’d love to run at Balmoral when I get back.

“I fully support any event that encourages people to get involved in running, especially youngsters. The mile will be a fun event and I hope it will encourage some of the participants to get more regularly involved with running.”

Those wishing to run in the mile are asked to enter in advance online at www.runbalmoral.com though limited places may still be available on the day. The entry fee is £5 with £4 going to GASTROCAN (Grampian Gastro-Oesophageal Cancer Research Fund).

Runners will set off in batches and the race will be chip-timed so that everyone gets an exact time for the accurately measured mile.

Although the emphasis is very much on informality and the fun of taking part, prizes will be awarded in a number of categories. A trophy will be presented to the fastest male and female runner and to the fastest secondary and primary school pupils (boys and girls). There will also be prizes for the fastest male and female JogScotland members. All participants in the mile will receive a certificate, medal and a commemorative mug.
