Lewis McKimmie kept Culter’s title challenge on track with a double, but it was hard work against a stuffy Hall Russell team that was played in very cold, wet and windy conditions.

Robbie Brown, Culter’s new signing from Highland League champions Buckie Thistle went straight into the team for his first appearance.

It was Wilson who was first to try his luck from the edge of the box but his shot hit the backside of Milne and just went wide of the post.

McWilliam then headed over Donald’s cross before ex-Culter player Pete Shaw had the home team’s first shot at goal in the 18th minute but Farquhar gathered easily.

McBain crossed for McAllister but the winger’s shot was touched away for a corner.

Seconds later McKimmie blasted wide and the striker was then felled in the box but the referee waved away Culter’s penalty claims just after the half hour mark.

Just before the break Simpson tipped McAllister’s header over the bar as the score remained goalless.

In the second half Farquhar produced a great block to deny Carroll before Shaw’s low drive just went inches wide of the post.

McBain’s cross in the 70th minute found McWilliam who turned his marker well but was unlucky to see his shot flash past the post.

On 74 minutes Culter went in front. McKimmie went on a surging run into the box but had his shirt pulled by Russell and the referee pointed straight to the penalty spot.

Lewis McKIMMIE stepped up himself to send the keeper the wrong way from 12 yards.

Hall Russell went straight up the park and Shaw had a great chance to level but his low drive again just went inches wide.

Whitfield’s powerful header from Hay’s corner produced a great block from McAllister to deny the tall winger in the last minute and in injury time Culter secured the points.

Murray played the ball to McWilliam who in turn floated the perfect pass to Lewis McKIMMIE who took a touch before stroking the ball home from six yards.

This weekend The Deesiders will be back on cup duty as they travel to Maud in the first round of the McLeman Cup, a competition they won last year.

Culter: Farquhar, Donald, Robertson, Kelly, Brown, Wilson, McAllister, Sand, McWilliam, McKimmie, McBain.
