Deeside & Donside athletes recognised at awards

Aberdeenshire Sports Council Sports Awards Evening was held last Friday at Garioch Sports Centre in Inverurie.

Deeside was strongly represented at the event with a number of athletes reciving awards.

The Young Male Sports Person of the Year Winner was Dylan Curry from Triangle Table Tennis Club.

Dylan was nominated by Banchory Academy.

The Young Female Sports Person of the Year Winner was also scooped up by a Deeside competitor.

Banchory and Stonehaven Athletics Club’s Alisha Rees was the deserving recipiant of the award.

Banchory Schools Orienteering Team were also in attendance to claim their award as Team of the Year winner.

Also at the ceremony was Garioch Gymnastics club member Izzy Tolometti who is from Alford.

Izzy is at present working with the National performance Squad and at the ceremony was Presented with a £500 Talent Fund by Billy and Sheila Walker of Turriff Transport Consultants Limited.

At Scottish Championships Izzy was 4th overall for the Seniors in the all- around competition.

She made Senior Apparatus Finals for bars, Floor and beam and got Bronze for floor where she competed her 2 1/2 twist as her dismount tumble for the first time.

She is the joint Senior Scottish Bars Champion.

A feat made even more impressive without a facility that is fully pitted.

Izzy has monthly camps in Largs which are residential plus she is likely to be invited to a 5 day training camp in Arque France a repeat of a very successful camp that she attended earlier in the year.

She has also achieved success at: Celtic Cup (Perth) - 2014 Team silver and 4th individually, Sainsbury’s School Games - 2014 team bronze, Celtic Cup (Cardiff) - 2015 Team silver - 2nd on bars and Northern Euros (Lisburn) – ( her first major international competition) in 2015 – where she contributed towards a team 5th.

Over 60 individuals and clubs were nominated across 11 categories and over 280 people attended the popular annual awards evening.

The evening is a way of rewarding and acknowledging local sports people in Aberdeenshire for their commitment to and/or achievement in sport during 2015 (or in the case of the Service to Sport category over many years).

Over 50 nominations were received for this year’s awards.

All nominees receive a certificate to recognise their contribution to sport.

The Sports Person of the Year is young boxer Billy Stuart from Macduff a 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games Silver Medalist at Samoa.
