Deeside Pupils Head To Italy For World Championships

It was a fantastic results for Deeside in the World Schools Orienteering Qualifying Event last weekend at Faskally, Pitlochry.

Orienteers representing local schools won three out of the four categories on the day.

Aboyne Academy won the Junior Boys section and Banchory Academy won both the Senior Girls and Boys sections.

The Junior Girls was won by George Heriot School, Edinburgh.

Nearly 70 pupils from throughout Scotland took part in the competition over a tough and challenging course.

Podium results for local pupils were: Senior Girls - 1st Eilidh Campbell, 2nd Kirsty Campbell; Senior Boys - 1st Alistair Chapman, 2nd Luke Graham of Banchory Academy; Junior Boys – 2nd Matthew Gooch from Aboyne.

The teams travelling to the ISF World Schools Orienteering Championships in Palermo, Italy next April as part of the Scottish Schools Squad are as follows:

Aboyne Junior Boys: Angus Fraser, Matthew Gooch, Grant McMurtrie, Ralph Silcock.

Banchory Senior Boys: Jake Chapman, Alistair Chapman, John Getliff, Luke Graham.

Banchory Senior Girls: Eilidh Campbell, Kirsty Campbell, Abi Mason, Megan Ricketts.

Banchory Academy’s Amber Graham qualified for the Junior Girls Scottish Select Team.

Maia Cowie and Anna Fletcher of Banchory who also took part in the event.

It is hoped that the schools’ success will inspire local youngsters to get out into the fresh air and become more active.
