The Braemar Gathering, which takes place this weekend, will see a Deeside competitor clinch the Heavy Events title for the first time.

Drumoak man, Craig Sinclair, is currently sitting a comfortable 140 points clear of his nearest rival for the title, fellow Scots muscleman Lorne Colthart.

Craig has totalled 420 points so far over the course of the 11 Grampian Highland Games event held throughout the summer.

Royan Graham, from The Glenfiddich Distillery, which has sponsored the Grampian Games Heavy Events Championship for over 30 years, said: “This has been my first year looking after Glenfiddich’s sponsorship of the Games and it has been an incredible summer packed with crowd pleasing performances by the Heavy Athletes.

‘‘We have enjoyed mixed weather but great attendances at every Games.

“Craig has had a spectacular season and everyone is looking forward to seeing him crowned at Braemar.”

The ‘Heavies,’, dressed traditionally in their own family tartans, are the highlight of the highland games circuit, with Braemar marking the end of the season.

The Gathering this Saturday, September 6, is expected to attract a crowd of over 5000 spectators who will witness a spectacular showcase of traditional Scottish culture, from piping and highland dancing to the heavy athletes in action, track and field events.

Craig and the other winners will be announced before Her Majesty, the Queen.
