Mar Orienteering Club members had a weekend to remember with a much anticipated visit from French 13 times World Orienterring Champion Thierry Georgiou.
Joined by an enthusiastic Scottish Junior Squad, the lucky Maroc athletes were treated to imaginative top level coaching sessions at Cambus O’May Forest and Muir of Dinnet led by the master himself, with emphasis on the need for a good warm up to avoid injury and getting mentally prepared for the session.
On Saturday evening Thierry gave a riveting lecture at the Victory Hall, Aboyne. The talk covered his orienteering career from the tender age of seven and included many pointers on key elements the orienteers should focus on during their race.
Jon Musgrave, senior Maroc coach, said: “I found the lecture utterly inspiring, showing how he developed from a youngster in a small town in France with a dream to a multi-world champion.
His passion for the sport of orienteering and for his own technical improvement came across very clearly and will provide much thought to the juniors at the session.
Thierry is a wonderful orienteer, role-model and person and I hope to have the privilege to meet him again.”
The weekend concluded with a training/warm up session followed by an extremely well attended Level C Event based at Burn O’Vat visitor centre. Over 150 orienteers took part and Thierry comfortably took the win on the 7.2 Km Brown course.
This event is the last of the year for Maroc who are gearing up to a very busy 2017 season culminating in the massive Scottish 6 Days event starting on July 31 which is being held around Ballater, Aboyne and Braemar.
