Holders Culter went nap against Hall Russell United in the quarter final of the Grill League cup with Chris “Teddy” Mountford the hero with a hat-trick.
The talismanic striker made a fantastic return following an unproductive year long spell at Highland League Deveronvale. It was by no means a one man show, however, with the Deesiders producing some wonderful flowing football.
The home side came out of the traps quickly with Adam Wilson firing over within the 1st minute before a ferocious Colin Craik drive was deflected behind for a corner.
A few minutes later Ryan Stott picked out Jamie McAllister who drove inches wide.
In a rare United attack Niall Clunas found Taylor Gowie unmarked in the area but he shot well wide from good position.
Adam Wilson then passed to Ryan Stott but he smashed his parting shot into the side netting. With half an hour played Lewis McKimmie found Chris Mountford free in the box but Greg Simpson pulled off a great save to keep the match level. Richard Shand then went on a swashbuckling run which ended with his fierce drive being turned over by the ‘keeper for a corner.
Chris Mountford should have opened his account in the 37th minute but he contrived to blast behind with the goal at his mercy.
The opener was not long in coming though when Chris Mountford set up Lewis McKimmie and he turned deftly to smash the ball home.
The same player was denied a couple of minutes later when his sharp drive cannoned off the base of the post and away to safety.
Just before the interval Ryan Stott played in a superb ball to Chris Mountford and he stroked the ball home from close range.
With the second period barely underway Culter were on easy street when Stott once again found Chris Mountford and he finished with aplomb from just inside the box.
Culter then appeared to sit back and United had a spell of pressure but rarely troubled John Farquhar in the Culter goal.
It was all over bar the shouting when McKimmie picked out Mountford, who blasted the ball home for his hat trick.
With the game over as a contest Culter sent on three subs with Dod McBain, Pete Shaw and Allan Youngson replacing McAllister, Mountford and Craik.
Culter were awarded a penalty soon after when Hugh Roberson was taken down in the box but Pete Shaw crashed his spot kick against the bar.
The fifth came soon after when a deep Shaw cross was headed home by a delighted Ryan Stott.
Minutes later Culter had the ball in the net courtesy of Adam Wilson but it was chalked off as McKimmie was deemed to have fouled a defender.
