Penalty decision is costly for Banchory

Banchory travelled to face RGU in their first league game since December 6 and having played their opponents just six weeks ago in the cup, losing 7-1 in the process, manager Girvan was in no doubts the task his team had to face at Kaimhill all-weather pitch.

Banchory again hit by injuries to no fewer than six first team players also now added Craig Chalmers, Grant Christie and Lee Melvin to the list.

Banchory started the game well, and both teams had early opportunities which were dealt with by both defences, Juan was causing RGU problems with his pace down the left and he and Gilbert were offering good support on the counter attack.

However, it was RGU who took the lead on 30 minutes when the centre midfielder picked the ball up on the halfway line and ran unchallenged through on goal to slot the ball past Davidson.

Gilbert then came close for Banchory just before half time but the score remained 1-0.

The second half started in the same fashion, Banchory i were doing well considering they had not played for 5 weeks unlike there opposition who had played up until the two week festive break.

Legs were starting to tire though, Stewart replaced Lawrence and Martin Girvan replaced Norton 20 minutes into the second half.

Banchory were coming back into the game and a chance from a corner fell to the head of Michael Girvan who forced the keeper into a good save, then Juan tested the keeper from distance. Banchory wee performing well but the final pass was eluding the away team.

In the 81st minute the game changed when, chasing back, Juan appeared to put in a solid sliding tackle and as the ball ran out for a corner the referee blew for a penalty. The RGU players looked as confused as the Banchory players but in the end Davidson was left with no chance as RGU extended their lead to 2-0. Several Banchory players were booked for protesting the decision.

Banchory tried to push forward and were then caught on the counter attack as a poor clearance fell to the RGU winger to slot the ball past Davidson from 8 yards on the 87th minute and the game was over.
