Torphins travelled to Sheddocksley to face Glendale X1 in a mid-table Division Two (East) clash. Both of Torphins’ usual goalkeepers were unavailable so Greg Fowlie helped his local club out by playing as a trialist for the tie.
The early chances fell to Torphins. Bruce created space for himself on the edge of the box and a low drive had the Glendale keeper beaten, but the ball flew inches past the post.
Five minutes later the striker had another opportunity. Travers chipped the ball forward and Michie headed it down for Bruce to hit a left foot volley that the keeper parried away for a corner. As far as chances for Torphins went in the first half, that was really about it.
Glendale came more and more into the game and on 25 minutes opened the scoring. The left winger came surging down the side and fed the ball through to a striker who hit it first time. Fowlie blocked well with his foot, but the attacker was quick to react and slid in to put the ball into the net.
The home side had a flurry of chances in the following ten minutes. On the stroke of half time a foul on Torphins’ Mitchell gave the Phins a dangerous looking free kick as the Glendale culprit was lucky to see only yellow. Travers’ curling free kick however was collected with ease by the Glendale keeper.
Torphins struggled in the second half as their opponents began dominating and soon after the restart found themselves with a two goal cushion.
A long searching ball from the left was heading straight for Johnstone who slipped and the attacker raced down to fire across Fowlie to score.
Fowlie pulled off the save of the match on 70 minutes when a low powerful drive was heading for the bottom corner but the stand-in keeper got a strong hand to the ball to push it wide.
Travers gave the country side a glimmer of hope on 75 minutes when he got in between two defenders before shooting across the goal into the far corner.
Glendale soon increased the lead to 3-1 when the tricky striker rifled a shot into the top left hand corner.
The home side eventually settled the game when Fowlie was beaten when a shot took an awkward bounce over the diving goalkeeper to make it 4-1.
The Phins almost grabbed a consolation right at the end but Cruickshank’s effort shaved the outside of the post.
