Professional golfer Richie Ramsay has been announced as the official patron of the Friends of ANCHOR Gala Golf Event which will take place at Inchmarlo Golf Club next month.

In celebration of the tenth year of the Friends of ANCHOR golf event, Richie has accepted the role as official ambassador of the tournament to show his support for the charity which directly supports cancer and haematology medical care in the North-east.

The Gala Golf Event is the most established and successful fundraising event for Friends of ANCHOR in the charity’s 15-year history.

The inaugural tournament was held in 2002 with 18 teams and the event has grown to be one of the highest profile charity golf tournaments in the region, seeing 30 golf teams taking part across the day and raising, on average, £50,000 for Friends of ANCHOR.

Sarah-Jane Milne, PR and fundraising manager at Friends of ANCHOR said: “We hope this year’s event will be the most successful yet with the aim of breaking the half million pound fundraising landmark for the golf tournament.

“We are delighted and incredibly privileged to have Richie Ramsay on board as the face of our golf day and look forward to developing the relationship with him over the coming years.”

This year’s Friends of ANCHOR Gala Golf Event will take place at Inchmarlo on Thursday, 17th May, followed by the Gala Dinner hosted and sponsored by the Marcliffe Hotel and Spa. Well-known local raconteur, Peter Mitchell, will compère the evening with entertainment from Ocean’s 3 and a guest appearance from Richie Ramsay recounting his many tournament tales and glories.

Richie Ramsay, who is sponsored by the Craig Group, the title tournament sponsor for the Friends of ANCHOR Gala Golf Event, said “It gives me great pleasure to be  able to use my golfing profile to benefit worthy, local causes like Friends of ANCHOR.

“Too many of us have been touched by cancer in some way so fundraising events such as the Gala Golf Event are incredibly important to continue driving awareness and financial support for cancer care in the region.”

Friends of ANCHOR was set up fifteen years ago to help support the ANCHOR Unit and local cancer research projects undertaken by leading clinicians in Aberdeen. The charity is committed to ensuring that every cancer patient attending the ANCHOR Unit receives the best possible care, treatment and support during and after their diagnosis.

Importantly, every penny raised goes directly to the cause as all the running and administration costs are fully covered by support from Balmoral Group.

Anyone interested in supporting the Gala Golf Event by entering a team or attending the dinner - or even by donating a raffle or auction prize can contact the Friends of ANCHOR office on 01224 859153.
