Banchorys hopes of Division 1 survival took a massive dent on Saturday as they played second bottom AC Mill Inn and both teams knew the importance of a win.
Banchory were down to the wire again with team selection, with Meldrum, Tully, Juan and Rooney all missing from the week before, Banchory had to call on the services of manager Martin Girvan and assistant Michael Girvan to put on a strip to start the game, with Fraser Mackie being the only sub, having been out for over four months.
The game started with AC Mill Inn going for the long ball down the wings, and this pressure finally paid off with 10 minutes gone when a hotly disputed offside shout was allowed to continue and the centre forward for AC Mill Inn slotted the ball past Davidson.
Shortly after that a collision in the penalty box resulted in Christie picking up a soft booking for claiming a foul, then to rub salt in the wounds five minutes later a hefty challenge in the middle of the park saw Christie pick up his second yellow.
Banchory were now down to 10 men with 75 mins to play, however it was the home side who started to pick up their game. With five minutes until half time the teams should have been level on numbers, as Chalmers raced through only to be taken clean out by the AC Mill Inn goalkeeper, however the referee only produced a yellow card.
The second half continued much the same way, with Banchory working hard in midfield without creating any clear cut chances. With twenty minutes to go Mackie replace Martin Girvan and Banchory went three up front, and this caused AC Mill Inn some problems, however it also left huge gaps at the back and it was from one of Banchory’s attacks that broke down and the counter attack left the pacy winger to add a second goal and surely kill off the hopes for the home team.
However Banchory showed great resilience and with ten minutes to go some good work down the right found Chalmers and his perfect cross found Mackie to reduce the deficit to one.
Banchory finished the game looking for the equaliser and with the last kick of the ball it almost looked like they had snatched it, when a cross found MacGregor at the back post but he failed to hit the target and the game was gone.
Banchory: Davidson, Lloyd, Martin Girvan, Brand, John Smith, MacGregor, Michael Girvan, Gilbert, Norton, Christie and Chalmers. Subs: Mackie.
