Saints defeated by defending champs

A missed penalty right on half time after Hermes keeper Sweeney was sent off was probably the defining moment in this match.

Hermes took the game to Saints early on and should have scored in only 3 minutes but a square ball was hit high over the Banchory bar from 6 yards.

The home side took the lead on 15 minutes when a simple through ball caught out the Saints defence and Wyness had a simple task to hit low past the advancing Chris Irvine

Saints had the ball in the net when Simpson converted Close’s cross but it was disallowed.

Ex Banchory player Alan McRae went close with a header and then another flashing header went close for the home side.

With ten minutes of the half remaining Hermes attacked up the right and with the linesman flagging for offside the Banchory defence stopped waiting for the referee to blow his whistle, but the linesman took his flag down allowing Wyness through on Irvine to score his and Hermes’ second.

But Saints were not done and they finished the stronger with Biskup’s 30 yard effort being saved by Sweeney and then right on half time Darren Reid burst through into the box only to be brought down by Sweeney who was sent off for his challenge. Jack Presly stepped up but slid the ball past the post.

The second half started with Jack Henderson coming on for Presly. McRae forced Irvine to block his effort and from the corner the home side headed just over.

A scramble in the Banchory six yard box was eventually cleared. At this point Ben McGregor replaced Josh Robertson to add some more attacking options.

Despite the numerical advantage Banchory found it difficult to make much headway, but from a bad pass back, Henderson found himself in the clear but the substitute keeper just managed to get to the ball first with Jack picking up the loose ball to turn and send the it past the post from long range.

Both sides had one further chance before the 90 minutes with Biskup going close and another former Saints player Ian Cruickshank sending an angled shot just past the far post.
