Torphins’ first fixture of 2012 was an away trip to a windswept Sheddocksley to face McTeagle. The Phins were on the hunt for revenge after a 4-3 defeat earlier in the season and they went at McTeagle right from the start.
The first chance fell to captain Michie. He played a neat one-two with Brown but his shot failed conviction when put through on goal.
D Cruickshank set Allardyce on his way down the right, and after cutting inside the defender into the box, he unselfishly rolled the ball across the goal for a simple tap in. However from a yard out and an open goal, Brown completely miscued and the ball was cleared.
On 15 minutes Brown, had another great chance to score. The forward dispossessed a defender and found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but failing to get a shot away resulted in the keeper diving at this feet and coming away with the ball.
Bruce had a long range effort come crashing off the bar and on 30 minutes the ball was in the net.
A Torphins corner was not cleared and Brown hit a shot from a tight angle. The ball took a deflection and looped over the goalkeeper into the top corner.
Bizarrely though as the Phins players celebrated, McTeagle played on, as the referee believed the ball came off the bar and into the keepers hands, where in fact it came off the back stanchion. After realising his mistake, and McTeagle defence admitting, the referee apologised to Torphins but still it remained 0–0.
McTeagle went agonisingly close to take the lead two minutes later. A midfielder surged forward and a superb low drive was matched by a superb diving save by Geddes who pushed the ball onto the post and D Cruickshank cleared off the line.
On 38 minutes Torphins finally broke the deadlock. Bruce held a ball up inside the penalty area and being pushed and pulled from a defender the referee awarded a spot kick. TRAVERS stepped up to slot the ball away.
McTeagle were only behind for three minutes before drawing level. The Phins defence, who had been solid to this point, were caught sleeping and a scramble on the 18 yard line was not convincing and a McTeagle forward lashed the ball past Geddes.
In the second half, McTeagle were trying to use the strong wind to their advantage by playing the long ball at every opportunity.
Torphins, however, kept the ball on the deck and a quick interchange of play between Mitchell and Wright put full back Wright flying down the left flank. The speedy birthday boy went past two players on a 70 yard run and was unlucky not to find the back of the net with a delicate flick past the keeper who blocked well.
Finally on 70 minutes Torphins took the lead. Mitchell played a ball through to Travers one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The midfielder slipped the ball past the on rushing goalkeeper who went right through Travers. The ball however hit the post and super sub EWEN was there to tap in from two yards to make it 2-1.
Brown should have put a little daylight between the teams five minutes later after Travers crossed a ball but the striker’s miserable day in front of goal continued as he failed to hit the target from 12 yards out.
McTeagle won a string of corners in search for a point but the Phins held on for the win.
Two wins on the trot for Torphins, and for a windy day they played some very good passing football to beat their opponents.
