Torphins are well beaten

Torphins travelled to Laurencekirk to face St Laurence which is always a heated, and traditionally a close match.

Allan was absent from the squad so Thomson joined Johnstone at centre half. D Cruickshank returned to left wing to replace Mitchell and Smith on the right to replace Allardyce.

The first ten minutes went past uneventfully before St Laurence began to overpower Torphins. The Phins looked tired and stretched whereas St Laurence looked the fitter side.

The home side began carving out chances and Cooper had to be alert to keep the side’s level. Torphins looked unable to string two passes together and there seemed to be no belief or confidence throughout the side.

St Laurence dominated possession in the first half and deservedly went in at half time with a 1-0 lead.

The home side’s left winger found himself onside with acres of space to run into. As he whipped a low ball in from the flank, Torphins’ Johnstone could only steer the ball into his own net.

The Phins did not improve any in the second half and were battered for 45 minutes by their opponents.

Saints achieved their second goal not long after the restart. This time the attack came from the right and a cross was met by a sweet right foot volley with the ball flying into the roof of the net.

The third came from a midfielder who ran with the ball from deep inside his own half without being challenged and was cool in front of goal to beat Cooper one-on-one.

Saints made it four when an attacker went round Cooper one on one and slipped a ball to his team mate who had the easy part to tap it in from a yard out.

Beveridge replaced Gilbert up front and MEINEN did really well to shrug off his defender and fire across the Saints goal keeper and put the ball into the far corner.

Travers had a long range shot tipped over the bar, and as far as chances for Torphins went that was it.

Saints finished off with a fifth to embarrass the Phins side when again the defence were stretched leaving it 4 on 1 at the back and Cooper had no chance as an attacker slipped the ball past to complete the victory.

Torphins: Cooper, S Kellas, Johnstone, Thomson, Wright, D Cruickshank, Michie, Travers, Smith, Brown, Gilbert. Subs: Beveridge, Meinen and M Kellas.
