Upper Deeside ASC hosted their annual challenge meet in Aboyne last weekend, and ended the day celebrating by winning the title for the second year in succession.
Competition was tough, with thirteen clubs participating from all over the North District. Particularly strong teams were fielded by Westhill District and Stonehaven, but in the end the 21-strong UDASC squad came out on top, with Westhill second, and Stonehaven third.
UD head coach, Rachel Green, said: “The meet has been established for several years now, and to our knowledge it is the only meet of its kind in Scotland. Rather than competing in individual events, swimmers enter up to two “challenges” consisting of a combination of three distances in one stroke, or four 50m sprints.
“The scoring is based on a points system which relates to current world records, so it’s pretty much impossible to work out who the individual challenge winners are – let alone the winning club – until the presentations at the end of the day. The atmosphere is always really exciting and you can imagine the cheer that went up when Upper Deeside discovered they had retained their title!”
UADSC podium places were: Gold: Brad Arthur and Stuart Masson (both two challenges), Tom Mitchell, Alasdair Bruce, Hannah Gordon, Kirsten Knight, Andrew Thomson and Rachel Masson. Silver: Rachel Masson, Tom Mitchell, Merryn Thomson. Bronze: Daniel Green (two challenges), Alasdair Bruce, Rory Bruce, Coralie Arthur.
