Banchory West Badminton Club’s mixed team recently played host to Westhill’s mixed team in one of the last matches of the season.
Hazel Beaton and Craig Stewart made a clean sweep of their three rubbers, winning in straightforward fashion against Westhill’s first couple 21-15, 21-17, against the seconds 21-14, 21-13 and against the thirds 21-12, 21-13.
Hilary Cowe and Malcolm Gall, playing in second slot for Banchory lost their first rubber, against Westhill’s second couple, by a nailbitingly close 22-20, 24-22, and to the first couple 21-15, 21-19, but finally found form to beat the third couple 21-19, 21-13.
Susan Leith and Gary Beaton had a strong start beating Westhill’s third couple 26-24, 21-18, but for them too the first and second couples proved just too strong and they lost those encounters 21-9, 21-17 and 21-18, 21-11 respectively.
But the wins were sufficient to give the Banchory side a 5-4 overall victory, leaving them at time of writing sharing second spot with Westhill in Division 1 of the Aberdeen and District Badminton League, both teams six points behind the leaders CAS.
Last week, Banchory’s ladies faced the youthful University team at the purpose built Aberdeen Sports Village.
The team took some time to adjust to the glare of the lights and the thud of bouncing basketballs in the adjacent hall space, with firstly Hazel Beaton and Hilary Cowe and then Hilary and Susan Leith losing their rubbers in straight sets.
Hazel and Susan however made a strong start winning their first set, but their opposition rallied and took the remaining two sets.
Despite suffering this 3-0 defeat the ladies team retains its league position of fourth out of seven teams in the Aberdeen and District ladies league.
