EXPERT: Judith Miller booked for Aboyne and Deeside Festival

Deeside and Donside, as often noted in this paper, are areas skilled in the recognition, acquisition and appreciation of quality.

So when one of the most recognisable and respected experts of antiquities in Britain comes to Finzean Community Hall on August 3 (7pm) as part of the Aboyne and Deeside Festival, it is sure to be an interesting night.

Judith Miller, of the BBC’s Antiques Road show will host an intimate (camera free) Roadshow-style evaluation of audience members’ collectables along with Lee Young of Lyon & Turnbull auction house.

Judith said: “I will do a talk about the world of antiques, how I got started, some amusing stories and behind the scenes of the BBC Antiques Roadshow...best buys, biggest regrets... I will do valuations of most things except paintings”

Evaluations can be a nice surprise for unsuspecting audience members.

Judith said: “A very rare late 19th century American cast iron mechanical bank, called a coasting bank, found in a cupboard in Peebles, was valued at £20,000-30,000.

‘‘Lyon & Turnbull recommended it should sell in their sister saleroom, Freemans in Philadelphia. It sold on Novemeber 14, 2013, for $266,500!

“Buy what you love and the best you can afford.

“Do research. Cultivate a friendly dealer who will look out for you.

“Go to auctions but be advised - it can be addictive!”
