Deesiders celebrate Burns Night in style

Locals flocked to Deeside Activity Park at the weekend to celebrate with haggis, neeps and tatties at the annual Robbie Burns Lunch.

The Burns Lunch is a tradition which started in 2005 with 20 guests in attendance. Ten years on, the event is now attracting upwards of 150 diners.

Ken Howie welcomed the crowd of Deeside Activity Park’s loyal customers, most of whom were “weel kent” faces.

Nicola Howie gave the ‘Selkirk Grace’ before everyone tucked into a starter of cock-a-leekie soup.

Guests stood and clapped as the ‘Chieftan Haggis’ was piped in by Lee Taylor and held up high by the Activity Park’s chief cook Joyce Tomlinson.

The haggis was given a stirring address in dramatic andgrandiloquent style by owner Ken, which had everything from a stamping of the foot to a loving whisper before a toast was made with a “wee dram” of whisky.

The meal was rounded off by Joyce’s clootie dumpling.

Diners then sat back and enjoyed the fiddle playing of David Anderson, who kicked off the entertainment with a beautiful rendition of “My Luve is Like a Red Red Rose.” This was followed by a selection of well known Burns tunes and concluded with a set from David’s latest album ‘Lilt’.

Several of the gentlemen donned kilts or tartan trews - a tradition which was carried on by the younger lads who accessorised their traditional outfits with less traditional wellies.

Mrs Linda Oust, who is a regular park visitor, said: “This is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon with my friends here at Deeside Activity Park, and a great celebration of Robert Burns.”
