Training providers around Scotland are offering people leaving the oil and gas sector the chance to gain the skills they need to move into other industries.
Thanks to the Transition Training Fund – the £12million fund established by the Scottish Government to support people affected by redundancies in oil and gas – five training providers across the country are offering around 340 places on a range of training courses.
The courses will offer people the opportunity to move into a number of industries such as gas engineering, renewables and low carbon technologies.
Mike Duncan, director of Energy Skills Scotland, part of Skills Development Scotland (SDS) which administers the fund on behalf of the Scottish Government, is encouraging people affected by redundancies to apply.
He said: “The Transition Training Fund aims to help retain the wealth of skills and experience developed by our oil and gas industry and to redeploy it in other sectors.
“This element of the fund allows training providers to help people move into a number of growth areas where there is a demand for skills, and it represents a real opportunity for people affected by redundancy to launch a new career.”
Thanks to the fund, Tullos Training has places to help address the shortage of gas engineers in the North East, while Maersk is offering training for people wishing to move into the renewables sector.
Lee Atkinson, head of sales and marketing at Maersk Training said: “With new wind projects under development in Scotland, and a shortage of operations and maintenance technicians, it is an opportune time for individuals to transition from the oil and gas sector.
“Maersk Training are committed to supporting the people of Scotland affected by the oil and gas downturn in to employment in the renewables market.
“With our wide range of career transition programmes, strong links with employers and industry leading information advice and guidance, we aim to work with individuals, use their transferable skills and find them employment in the sector”
Inverness College UHI will train people in either electrical, solar, biomass or heat pumps, while Ayrshire College has places for people looking to work in renewables.
West College Scotland has a range of places available for training covering sectors including plumbing, health and safety, electricians, gas engineering and low-energy renovation.
West College Scotland Principal and Chief Executive Audrey Cumberford said: “West College Scotland is delighted to be working in partnership with the Transition Training Fund to offer new skills to individuals from Scotland’s oil and gas sector.
“The training programmes we offer reflect the skills needed by employers to take advantage of opportunities in our local and national economy.
“We hope as many individuals and organisations as possible can benefit from this funded transition training which will increase the pool of talent available to Scotland’s employers.”
The training places now being made available are one element of the Transition Training Fund, which also gives individuals the chance to apply for support to undertake training that will help them a find a new job.
