A fifteen year old Aboyne Academy pupil has become the youngest person to fly a glider solo at the Deeside Gliding Club near Aboyne.
Zachary Sole flew his first solo on Sunday, June 9, after successfully completing the club’s training syllabus and a final check with an instructor.
To make the occasion more special, he was towed into the sky by his father, Lionel Sole, who is also a glider pilot and helicopter training captain for Bristows.
Zac has been training since the spring holidays, and made rapid progress to solo on his 38th flight. He made use of a recent change in the law (in which the age limit for solo was dropped from 16 to 14) and has become the first of this new generation to solo at Aboyne.
Zachary said: “When I first started gliding, it seemed hard but after a few flights I found myself doing things automatically. During my solo flight, I kept expecting an instructor to tell me where to go, but when they didn’t I found myself knowing what to do.”
Having grown up around flying, Zac would like to progress his flying with aerobatics and competitions. However, his main motivation is for the sheer fun of such a unique sport.
