Aboyne skatepark appeal rejected after DPEA visit

An appeal for permission to build a skatepark on Aboyne’s historic green has been rejected after a visit from a DPEA reporter.

Scottish Government reporter for the Directorate for Planning and Environmental Appeals (DPEA) Stephen Hall made his decision following a visit to the planned site of the skatepark on January 29.

The reporter’s visit followed an appeal lodged by Aboyne Wheelers against the Marr Area Committee’s decision not to back a skatepark on the green, and saw members from both the yes and no side of the argument come out to make their voices heard.

Upon hearing the news, Aboyne Wheelers posted the following message on their Facebook page: “We are sure that you are all as devastated as we are but, while we retreat to take stock of what we’ve gone through and learned, we are planning a full group meeting on Wednesday, March 12, 6.30-7.30pm, in the Canteen Area of the Deeside Community Centre, Aboyne. Thanks, as always, for your continued, unwavering, support.”

Wilson Forbes, chair of Mid Deeside Community Council, said: “From a community point of view I’m pleased. It was a sensible decision from the reporter which has backed up the view that the general public made clear when they voiced their concerns.

“The argument has never been that there should not be a skatepark, it was always just a question of situation and I hope that the applicants take their plans forward to another location.”
