An Alford dental practice which is barely four years old has been named as Scotland’s most child-friendly dentist at a big awards ceremony.
Jill young, the practice manager, and her husband Justin, a dentist, only opened Young Smile Dental Care at the start of 2013, but have quickly gained a good reputation, forging links with the primary school and the academy.
On receiving the award, Justin said: “It’s a real boost for us and the team - it’s always good for our patients, and good to be recognised for our work.
“A lot of our patients are under 18, and this is a good one to win, especially with the new school just built in Alford.”
This year’s Dentistry Scotland Awards were hosted by the Marriott Hotel in Glasgow, and were attended by approximately 300 guests.
To Justin and Jill, promoting good oral health in children is a passion close to their hearts, as they have a 19-month old son called Brodie, and another baby due in February.
Jill said: “For us, being child friendly isn’t just about handing out stickers at the desk and having toys in the waiting room.
“It’s about seeing mothers through pregnancy, getting involved with the kids at primary school and getting them clued up and interested in oral health and seeing them right through secondary school, and maybe into a career in dentistry.
“And ultimately, we are providing employment in the industry locally.”
They currently employ a staff of 12 - one practice manager, two receptionists, four dentists and five nurses.
As well as winning best child friendly practice, Young Smile were nominated in the categories of best high technology practice, best NHS practice, and best team.
Moira Milne, rector at Alford Academy, wrote a testimonial for their entry. She said: “I take this opportunity to highly commend Young Smile Dental Care and stress how proactive they have been in supporting the work and life of young people at Alford Academy.”
Young Smile have also been short-listed for Best NHS Practice and Best Team at the Dentistry Awards 2015, which is UK wide. The winners are announced on November 27.
