Torphins Community Council is giving its backing to plans to revamp the local hotel.

A public meeting was called by the council last week to gauge local opinion on proposals for the Learney Arms, which closed last year.

Residents gave their support to a change of use application by owner Alex Shepherd, whose plans include a bar.

The community council objected to a move last year to turn the premises into a house.

Mmebers have drawn up a response to forward to Aberdeenshire Council

It says: “The new proposal is a potentially effective solution, which is recognised as possibly the best opportunity now available.

“The application provides the village with a refurbished eating and drinking establishment on the site, and limited visitor accommodation, both of which will support some employment.

“Proceeding with the plan also maintains the fabric of the building, including the front section proposed as

a dwelling house, thus overcoming the fear of an unsightly, declining building in the village centre.”

The council wants concerns over parking, access for children and the protection of listed status to be addressed.
