Donside lass Claire Birnie and partner Jamie Johnston are teaming up to take part in this year’s Cairngorm Challenge - a hike and bike adventure in the Cairngorms National Park - in support of Barnardo’s children’s charity.

They face an arduous 50km of cycling and walking, including a climb of over 1,000m and are aiming to collect a minimum of £800 for Barnardo’s.

Their team is named Thing 1 and Thing 2 after two adventurous fun-making characters made famous in a Dr Seuss children’s book. The challenge takes place on Saturday, September 8, and sets off from Badaguish outdoor centre, near Aviemore.

As part of their overall fundraising effort for Barnardo’s, Claire, 19, of Cushnie, near Alford, and Jamie, 23, of Culloden, near Inverness, are also holding a pub quiz at the Muggarthaugh Hotel, near Alford, on Friday, August 31.

The Pub Quiz starts at 7.30pm and promises to be suitable for all the family with questions ranging from children’s literature, local knowledge, to astrophysics!

There will also be a raffle with a wide range of prizes generously donated by organisations including the Nevis Range Mountain Experience, the Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival, Freeze Pro Shop, Highland-Instinct and others.

Anyone who would like to take part in the charity pub quiz can call (019755) 81389 to book. The cost is £12 per team (four people).
