As the largest single provider of business land and premises in the North-east of Scotland, Aberdeenshire Council always has properties available for sale and lease throughout the area.
It is also improving its use of space by carrying out a thorough review of the buildings it occupies and using innovative techniques to improve working practices and allow staff to work more flexibly and efficiently.
By combining these practices with a review of the space it occupies, the council has been able to identify a number of properties to be released for disposal on the open market.
The main purpose of the review is to ensure that the council’s use of property is in line with what is required in the communities it serves.
However, as part of the process the council has been able to reduce its space requirements and as a result, has been able to identify many cases where it can make savings by terminating leases with external landlords or can raise capital by disposing of property.
The properties identified for disposal may be suitable for use for their existing purposes, for example industrial properties or offices.
In some cases the properties will be suitable for an alternative use or for redevelopment, subject to planning permission being obtained.
Allan Whyte, Aberdeenshire Council’s Head of Property and Facilities Management, said: “The council has adopted a modern, innovative approach to service delivery that relies on staff working more flexibly than in the past.
“This is beneficial in terms of tailoring the council’s service delivery to meet ever changing demands.
“In addition, the property disposals that will result will support the council in delivering its capital plan to improve the service it provides to communities.
“The changes to our use of property have commenced and will be delivered in a managed process over the next few years. Properties are being released onto the market at an appropriate time during the process.”
The properties to be released will be added to Aberdeenshire Council’s ongoing list of disposals, which includes offices, industrial units, shops, development land and residential properties in locations throughout the area.
