For most of us New Year’s Day is a day to recover from the night before, relax with family and friends and think about what the next year will bring.

But, for the last four years, that hasn’t been the case for one Peterculter man who has seen in the new year with a freezing plunge into the North Sea from Stonehaven Harbour.

Michael Hopkins has taken to the water in many guises to raise charity funds including memorably in a Batman costume.

Last year he managed six minutes in the icey depths before having to come to land, raising a personal £1,000 out of the £20,000 total raised at last year’s event.

This time though Mike is keeping any costume ideas under his hat: “You’ll just have to wait and see what I’m going as this time but I’ve already had some ideas.

In his role as ‘lead dipper’ he hopes to see a record turn-out of a hundred ‘dippees’ at this year’s event.

Around 70 turned up last year with 1,00 spectators watching on.

Money raised from the dip will be donated to local cancer charity CLIC Sargent and a minimum sponsorship must be raised to take part.

The dip will take place from noon on January 1, 2014 and all participants will be treated to a free Clic Sargent T-shirt, a gym bag (from Woodview Embroidery), a bag of sweets from Auny Betty’s and hot soup courtesy of Cool Gourmet.
