Pupils at Finzean School and Ballogie Nursery were celebrating this week at the news they have been awarded £300 from the RunBalmoral 2015 Young People’s Sports Bursary.

Secretary of the school and nursery’s Parent Teacher Forum, Catriona Tanner, applied for the funding to promote cycling within the school, which is already very popular amongst many pupils at both the school and nursery.

She said: “After consultation with children and parents, cycling was chosen as being the sport most beneficial to all the children and the one which best suits our needs, not to mention our beautiful location. The school has already offered cycling as one of its ‘Golden Time’ activities, an option which was over-subscribed from the start, and the children are looking forward to our annual sponsored bike ride event in May, which last year saw 28 kids from both the school and nursery rise to the challenge of riding from Aboyne to Ballater, some 8.5 miles.”

Chair of the Parent Teacher Forum, Andrew Farquharson, added: “We are very grateful to Run Balmoral for their extremely generous Sports Bursary. Our intention is to put it towards helping the children develop their cycling skills and support cycling as a regular school activity both now and in the future.”

In a busy week for Finzean, the school was also awarded a FairAware certificate, in recognition that it is now a Fairtrade school. The first Fairtrade award of its kind, FairAware supports schools in recognising Fairtrade activities going on in school, and learning about Fairtrade issues.
