Employment service for people with disabilities and health issues

Aberdeenshire Council has launched a new employability service to support adults with a learning or physical disability, mental health condition, or substance misuse issue who are ready to seek employment.

The service is open to adults aged 16-65 and referral can be made through care teams or job centre schemes enabling access to an employability officer and support worker who will work with people to find a job or training.

Chairman of Aberdeenshire Council’s Social Work and Housing Committee Councillor Gurudeo Saluja said: “This new service will support people to gain new skills and support them to train for work and is part of the council’s commitment to providing employability assistance to vulnerable groups.”

Service users who live in Aberdeenshire can be referred by Aberdeenshire Council’s multi-disciplinary care teams, transition workers as well as by disability employment advisors at Job Centre Plus through the Workchoice Programme.

Workchoice is a government sponsored programme aimed at supporting adults with disabilities and health issues to reach their full potential in the workplace.

The employability service will provide options from paid employment, voluntary work, training, workplace experience, self employment or the Workchoice programme.

All of the options available will be tailored to support people depending on their individual circumstances whether it’s someone looking to gain new skills, contribute to a worthwhile project through voluntary work or progress to a permanent role.

Employability service workers will be based in Banff, Fraserburgh, Peterhead, Ellon, Inverurie, Stonehaven and Banchory.

The new service has emerged from a review of the council’s previous Employment Development Service and will widen provision to look at opportunities available to all disability groups and those with health issues who are eligible for services.

A closer working relationship with care teams to support people in employment is a key strategic aim of the new service.
