Gliders tackle tricky conditions in competition

Deeside Gliding Club played host to the Scottish Interclub League gliding competition at Aboyne Airfield at the weekend.

A total of 12 gliders from four Scottish gliding clubs were launched by the Aberdeenshire Club’s two tugs, setting off in tricky conditions for a cross-country route Aboyne – Braemar – Rhynie - Aboyne.

Only two successfully crept around the course, in a little over two hours and at heights seldom above 4,000 feet – low by Deeside standards.

One competitor was retrieved by road from a friendly farmer’s field near Lumsden.

Scoring takes account of distance and speed achieved, handicapped according to the performance of the glider.

The team from Highland Gliding Club won the day with 804 points. Deeside Gliding Club was not far behind with 716, followed by Scottish Gliding Centre with 413 and Cairngorm Gliding Club with 58.

Normal gliding operations continued uninterrupted in the afternoon with some training and recreational flying, everything being hangared safely away in time for an evening barbeque.
