SNP Aberdeen South and North Kincardine MSP Maureen Watt has welcomed the Scottish Parliament’s move to simultaneously translate and webcast a members debate in English and Polish, a first for Holyrood.
The webcast was of a members debate on the ‘Great Polish Map of Scotland’; the three dimensional map of our nation which was built by Polish nationals in recognition of Scottish hospitality to Polish Soldiers during the Second World War and which has recently achieved B-listed status by Historic Scotland for its contribution to the nation’s built heritage.
Ms Watt said:“I believe that it is fitting that the Polish language has become the first to be translated in the chamber, as Poland is a nation which shares a historical bond with Scotland which endures to this day.
“It is estimated that there are currently around 60,000 Polish people currently living in Scotland, and there is a large Polish community in my Aberdeen South and North Kincardine constituency. Therefore, it is important that we connect with those who choose to make Scotland their home.”
