The family of a Deeside man have raised more than £12,000 in his memory.

Jim Duguid’s wife and three daughters were devastated when he died last year aged 59 from bowel cancer.

They turned their focus on fundraising and gathered the money from a single event in Banchory for the Bowel and Cancer Research charity.

Wife Julia and daughters Lynne, 35, Louise, 34, and Michelle, 32, have been praised for their efforts by the organisation.

Lorry driver and keen golfer Mr Duguid, from Torphins, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in November, 2014, and passed away four months later.

Lynne, from Banchory, said: “We lived in hope that one day we would get some good news, but sadly that never happened.

“Dad had one setback after another and died at home.”

The family decided to do their bit to fundraise for the charity.

Lynne added: “It was our way of coping - we needed something to focus on.

“We wanted to raise money and awareness so that other people wouldn’t have to find themselves in the same situation.”

Mum and daughters and a family friend organised a musical evening in Banchory’s Burnett Arms Hotel which raised £12,049 for the charity.

Local businesses, relatives and friends donated raffle and auction prizes.

Mr Duguid’s employer Miller Plant gifted a round of golf at the Trump course which was auctioned on the night.

Lynne said: “We couldn’t believe we’d raised so much money.

“Dad would have been really amazed and proud of what we have achieved.”

Deborah Gilbert, chief executive of Bowel and Cancer Research, has thanked the family for their support.

She said: “It is tragic that Jim Duguid lost his battle against bowel cancer at such a young age.

“Our aim is to fund research so that no one should die of this disease in future.

“We can only do that thanks to the incredible support we receive from fundraisers such as Julia, Lynne, Louise and Michelle.”
