Donsiders can share their views on the proposed pedestrianisation of Alford’s Greystone Road in a consultation later this month.
The move is proposed as part of the town’s new Community Campus development in the interest of public safety.
The consultation will take place next Wednesday, February 25, at Alford Community Centre Lounge from 2-4pm and 6-8pm. Members of the public can have their views heard on proposals to prohibit vehicles from the section of Greystone Road running adjacent to the £37 million development.
Council officers will be there to discuss the matter and answer any questions. The proposed section of road would be pedestrianised only at the entrance to the new campus and would remain open to cyclists.
Access to David Maclean Drive and Alford Ski Centre car park would be maintained.
If the proposal goes ahead, motorists will access the campus via the newly built link road leading off the A944.
The idea of building a Community Campus was suggested after Aberdeenshire Council’s Education, Learning and Leisure Service identified that lford Primary School and Alford Academy could no longer cope with the number of pupils zoned to attend it.
It was agreed that a replacement Alford Community Campus will be built in the town. The proposed site for the new school is on Greystone Road, to the west of the existing school campus.
A series of stakeholder meetings have been held with members of the Alford community, planning consultation has taken place and the formal planning application has been submitted.
According to a timeline published by Aberdeenshire Council, this year should see occupancy of the new site.
The development started in 2010 when the Policy & Resources Committee met to agree project parameters, preferred site option and budget costs.
Parents, pupils, staff and the wider community were consulted on the plans to relocate both schools to establish whether the proposedcampus would meet the needs of the Donside community.
