The Aboyne Wheelers skatepark group have appealed the decision to refuse planning permission for their proposal on the village Green.

Councillors on the Marr Area Committee voted five to two against the facility in July after previously differing a decision pending a site visit.

The group says it has since visited 19 alternative sites in the village but say that apart from the Green “there is actually no other suitable and, crucially, available, location for a skatepark in Aboyne.”

The controversial plan for the facility strongly split opinions in the village with some seeing it as a much-needed facility for youngsters while others pointed out the proximity to the Aboyne and Dinnet Parish Church and the fact was to be situated close to a playpark for younger children.

Council Officers received a total of 149 valid representations (76 support/73 objections) on the issue before it came to committee.

The appeal statement from the group said: “The proposed area is already a site for recreation purposes. The proposal to situate a skatepark here would definitely serve to enhance the recreation opportunities on offer for young people on The Green, creating a safe, visible, family friendly, informal wheeled sports facility.”

A Wheelers spokesperson added: “The main question we are concerning ourselves with now is, “why NOT adjacent to the play park?”. Why is it absolutely fine for younger children to play at this location but yet it is not ok for their older siblings to also play here?”
