A former Banchory Academy pupil is looking to build on the success of a sponsorship scheme in an African country.
Rona Craig is hoping to receive donations which will give children in Uganda the opportunity of a proper education.
Rona decided to start the sponsorship scheme whilst teaching in the country.
She said: “After spending a year in Uganda teaching at Bulenga Modern Primary School, I set up a sponsorship scheme to try and help some of the children who cannot afford to go to school get an education, and the chance of a better future. Every year since then, the sponsorship scheme has grown beyond my expectations due to the generosity of friends, family and kind readers of the Piper.”
Since setting up the scheme in 2006 Rona has received donations of over £1000 which have been used to pay school fees, lunches and uniforms for the children.
“Last year through sponsorship and fund-raising we were able to pay the school fees and school lunches of 52 children along with school uniforms for those most in need. During trips back to Uganda it has been a privilege to see for myself the impact that sponsorship has had for so many children. It just shows how every penny really does count. I would like to thank everyone whose kind support has made this possible but it is the gratitude of the children themselves which is most humbling,” said Rona.
The children in Uganda wrote letters to their sponsors at the end of last year thanking them for giving them the opportunity of an education. Although the scheme has done very well Rona is eager to help more children in Uganda by finding new sponsors.
“For these children, getting an education is a truly life changing opportunity but unfortunately there are always so many more children to help. I would love to find some new sponsors for the new school year which starts in February. Donations for lunches and school uniforms would also be much appreciated. Sponsorship for one year costs £36 for children in nursery-P2 class, £42 for P3-P6, £50 For P7 and £125 for the boarding section. School lunches are £15 for a year and a school uniform costs £5.50. If you think you might be interested in sponsoring a child or would like to make a donation please contact me for more information.”
