Sporting and television big names teamed up last week to take part in the Sandpiper Trust Challenge Day at Dunecht Estate.
Rugby legend Gavin Hastings, Olympic gold medallist rower Katherine Grainger, BBC documentary Landward’s Sarah Mack and Banchory’s own Ben Kilner, a professional snowboarder, made up the celebrity team at the fourth Sandpiper Challenge Day which took place on Friday June 13.
Inspired by the work of the Sandpiper Trust, they went head to head against 20 other teams to raise money and awareness for this important local charity.
The Sandpiper Challenge Day is a unique combination of clay pigeon shooting, golf and brown trout fishing on the Policy Loch on the stunning Dunecht Estate.
A Search and Rescue Sea King helicopter made a dramatic appearance at 6.15pm as part of the programme of events.
The Search and Rescue team, together with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, the Scottish Ambulance Service, Emergency Consultants from NHS Grampian and BASICS-Sandpiper responders worked together to simulate an extrication rescue which involved winching a patient into the helicopter further demonstrating the life-saving and vital work undertaken by the emergency services.
The local trust was established in 2001 and works to get fast, effective help to victims of accidents or sudden illnesses throughout Scotland, particularly in remote and rural areas.
Claire Maitland, co-founder of the Sandpiper Trust, said: “Raising an amazing £140,000 from our fourth Sandpiper Challenge Day will allow us to purchase additional Sandpiper bags and provide further training for our network of emergency responders.
‘‘I want to thank everyone who supported us – it’s simply amazing.”
The day’s sporting challenge was followed by a champagne reception, dinner and auction.
