Warning over telephone fraud

Grampian Police is warning businesses and residents in the force area to be aware of a telephone scam which has already targeted two people in high value frauds.

The fraudsters call purporting to be from the victims’ bank before trying to get bank details, which are subsequently used to transfer funds.

A Grampian Police spokesperson said: “This type of fraud has taken place in different areas of the UK previously and there have now been two recent reports of businesses being targeted in the Grampian area.

“By following a few simple practices, you can easily reduce the chance of becoming a victim of this type of scam. As always, people should be wary of providing sensitive information, particularly bank details and passwords, by phone or other means. Your bank can provide information on how to keep your details safe and keep your transactions secure if you are in any doubt.”

Anyone who feels they may have been targeted by this method or who requires any further information is urged to contact Grampian Police on 0845 600 5 700 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
