Banchory orienteers retain Michael Booth Trophy

Banchory Academy were overall winners at the Scottish Schools Orienteering Festival held in glorious weather at Dalkeith Country Park this week.

They retained the Mike Booth Trophy with a convincing win over George Heriots and Fortrose Academy.

Royal Deeside had a strong turnout with nearly 70 pupils representing 12 local schools from Durris to Ballater, boosted by recent coaching sessions from Mar Orienteering Club.

Banchory and Aboyne Primaries were 8th & 9th out of 43 in the junior school category and Aboyne Academy was also 7th out of 20 Senior school teams.

The event was attended by almost 500 pupils travelling from all over Scotland.

Team wins from Ballater Primary P5/6 Boys, Banchory Primary P7 Girls, Banchory Academy S3 Boys and S3 Girls. 3rd place for Aboyne S2 Boys.

Top 10 individual placings were: P5/6 Boys - 2nd Calum Smith & 7th Craig Smith, Ballater, 9th Rory Black & Ben Reid, Aboyne.

P7 Boys - 1st Joel Gooch, Aboyne, 3rd Ewan Musgrave, Kincardine O’Neil & 8th Neil Pritchett, Banchory.

P7 Girls - 1st Hannah Smith/Sula Munro & 3rd Kirsty Rough/Ruby Lumsden, Banchory.

S1 Boys - 1st Matthew Gooch, Aboyne & 10th Christopher Milligan, Banchory; S1 Girls - 3rd Amber Graham, Banchory; S2 Boys - 5th Grant McMurtrie & 9th Angus Fraser, Aboyne.

S3 Boys - 1st Alistair Chapman, 2nd John Getliff & 3rd Luke Graham, Banchory.

S3 Girls - 1st Eilidh Campbell, 4th Kirsty Campbell & 8th Claire McGarvey, Banchory.

S4 Boys - 1st Joe Wright.

S5/6 Boys - 1st Jake Chapman.

S5/6 Girls - 2nd Abi Mason & 4th Megan Ricketts, all Banchory.

Speaking on behalf of Mar Orienteering Club, Patricia Graham said: “This is a brilliant set of results.

“Well done to all involved, particularly to those attending for the first time.”
