Biskup’s goal seals win

Banchory St Ternan manager Sandy Carrol shuffled the pack for the second Grill League Cup match, making a few changes after the East End game. Goalkeeper Justin Knowles and defenders Darren Reid, Josh Robertson and Murray Buchan all made a start.

Ellon forced the early pace winning a fist minute corner and then Darren Reid’s misplaced pass gave his opponents a half chance but Murray Buchan’s tackle cleared the danger.

Ellon forced another three corners, all of which were well defended, but it looked as though it was a matter of time before the away side opened the scoring.

But it was Banchory who got in front on 15 minutes when Jindrich Biskup picked he ball up in the box, turned two defenders and fired low past the Ellon keeper.

There were few chances after this for either side and it was not until the 28th minute that Saints went close with an Andrew Close free kick coming off the top of the Ellon bar.

Ellon had the final two chances of the first half with a free back post header going just over the bar and then a bad pass back by Gordon Milne put Darren Reid under pressure but Justin Knowles saved at the feet of the Ellon forward.

Banchory opened the second half brightly and from a Darren Pyper header, Biskup had a great chance to get his second but his low shot was deflected to safety by the keeper’s leg.

More chances came from Close whose goal bound shot was deflected for a corner, and then Jack Henderson beautifully chipped his defender only to see the Ellon keeper make a fine save.

Saints’ Craig Simpson who had been playing well in his left midfield role, took a knock and had to be replaced by Andy Smith on 56 minutes.

Biskup became provider when after some nifty foot work his cross was chested down by Close who squared for Henderson to side foot into the net, but the linesman had his flag up for a goal kick.

Knowles had to look smart to make a low save at his post as Ellon began to get back into the game with 25 minutes remaining.

United then passed up a great chance to equalise when from a cross Johnson hooked his effort wide from six yards.

Saints sub Smith then took an injury and had to be replaced by Danny Ross on 82 minutes.

Ellon were finishing strongly but the Banchory defence was standing firm.

Ellon’s Lawson saw his header go a foot over and at the other end Biskup’s curling shot also just dipped over the bar.

In the final seconds, Banchory’s Gordon Milne was rather harshly shown a second yellow card and was ordered from the field of play which put a dampner on what was by no means a physical game.
