Draw for Saints in Superleague opener

Lewis United provided the opposition for Banchory’s first Superleague encounter of the season and with both teams having won their first two Grill League Cup matches, a good match was on the cards.

However the game was a bit disappointing with Saints not producing their form of late with the visitors capitalising on two gifted goals to go 2-0 up before pressing the self destruct button by having three men sent off, allowing Saints to square the game in the final fifteen minutes.

Lewis were the first to show when an early strike was deflected past the Banchory post and it took a while for the home side to get their act together.

Allan Ogston was looking lively and from his long pass Shaun Carrol volleyed well over. This typified Saints play as some of their lead up work was quite good but there was no finish.

Right on half time a needless foul by Gary Cruickshank wide right gifted Lewis United a free kick that ended with a shot coming off Sim’s left hand post, run across the line to be forced into the net despite the efforts of Pyper to clear.

At the restart, Michael Skene replaced Allan Ogston at right back who had suffered a nasty cut eye and within eight minutes Skene was unfortunate to score an own goal after attempting to clear a low cross.

For a short spell the city team looked more dangerous and Grant Sim had to look lively to make a double save, the first palming away at full stretch and then blocking the rebound.

On 70 minutes the game began to turn Banchory’s way however, when a Lewis sending off gave Saints the impetus they needed.

With more space being found, the half chances began to appear, and on 78 minutes a free kick was awarded 20 yards out with Carrol stepping up to dispatch a low shot low into the corner of the net.

As the United players became more frustrated another of their players was sent packing for a second bookable offence.

On 82 minutes Carrol stepped up again for another free kick and this time he expertly curled the ball over the wall into the top left hand corner to make the scores level at 2-2. The gane was not over though as another Lewis player was red carded, but despite the numerical advantage they could not find that all important winner.
