During the Easter weekend the Banchory Boys Club under 15s football team headed off to Barcelona to compete in the Costa Daurada Cup 2016.
The competition has a similar format to the Champion’s League where initially teams play a round robin system in separate leagues before being placed in either the ‘Absoluto’ or ‘Consolacion’ knock out competition.
After playing three closely fought matches against teams from Spain and Northern Ireland in the A league the Hawks were placed in the Consolacion knockout cup.
In the semi final the Hawks came up against Pallaresos a wonderfully skilled local Spanish team but goals from Paul Ross and Captain for the day Murray Crawford edged the very close game and fired the Hawks into the final with a 2 - 0 win.
Murray Crawford again led the team out in the final against Carryduff Colts, a very tough group of lads from Belfast and from the start it was clear the game was going to be a good old fashioned Celtic battle in the scorching Spanish sun.
The Belfast lads took an early lead when they scrambled the ball over the line in the opening minutes, but the Hawks quickly regained their composure and drew level half way through the first half when Stuart Marshall cut inside from the left and struck an unstoppable 20 yard shot high into the roof of net.
The 1 - 1 scoreline was a fair reflection on the game at half time but the Hawks started the second half with a bang with some sublime one touch passing which found Max Fleurot at the edge of the box who fired home an inch perfect strike leaving the keeper stranded.
The Hawks continued to press home their advantage and won a free kick near the corner flag which Paul Ross whipped over for Blair Duncanson to meet with a powerful header which flew into the top corner.
Blair Duncanson got his second shortly after when he gathered the ball at the edge of the box, dipped his shoulder and fired a shot into the far corner leaving the keeper with no chance.
The game looked won with 10 minutes to go but the Belfast lads never gave up and pulled back to score from a late penalty but the Hawks finished the match with great maturity to see out the game and lift the Consolacion Cup.
Blair Duncanson also picked up the trophy for the top goal scorer in the competition.
An absolutely amazing experience for the boys, playing and winning in Europe making loads of new friends including the Spanish and Finnish girls teams and celebrating our success with a visit to the Nou Camp Stadium Barcelona before heading home.
The Hawks would like to thank all our sponsors, The Tee Room Inchmarlo, Deeside Construction, North East Ceilings, Peter Morrison and everyone else who has supported us on this great adventure.
The Hawks are looking to strengthen the squad in all areas for next season and are looking for quality players born in 2001. Please contact the team by email at Craigduncanson@aol.com for a trial.
