Golden advice for Rhona

A talented young middle-distance athlete from Torphins was selected by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes to take part in a recent ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ Education Day at Loughborough College on April 2.

17-year-old Rhona Auckland, who competes for Banchory-Stonehaven AC, attended the day with her coaches Ken and Joyce Hogg and mother Pam.

Athletes, coaches and parents took part in the Education Day which aimed to educate them about the preparation needed ahead of the summer athletics season.

The athletes were invited to the prestigious event as a result of their achievements at the Aviva Scottish Schools Championships in 2010 where Rhona won the 3000m title in the A age group.

This year she will be aiming to again make the final as well as improve her personal bests for 1500m and 3000m and run her first 5000m on the track.

Dame Kelly said: “The ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ Education Days are an excellent opportunity for me to share my knowledge and experiences with the young athletes like Rhona and to help them on their journey through school, junior and onto senior athletics.

“Education about the sport is a hugely underestimated part of a young athlete’s development process, which is why I am so passionate about providing it through a structured and inspirational programme.”

Rhona said: “I am delighted to have been selected for ‘Future Stars with Kelly’ and it has inspired me to work harder and aim higher.

“I really enjoyed the aqua-jogging – it was a fantastic experience and definitely a training method I hope to use in the future.”
