League leaders prove too strong

Torphins’ seven game unbeaten run came to an end against league leaders Hazlehead United.

Brown returned to the starting line-up as Travers missed out due to suspension. Hazlehead were looking lively from the start with some very good movement off the ball but Torphins held form and were not letting United have any clear cut chances.

Torphins had a couple half chances through Ewen and Gilbert and Allardyce had a shot that flew narrowly over the bar.

On 30 minutes Hazlehead broke the deadlock. A good long ball was flicked on by a forward whose team mate ran in and slotted home.

D Cruickshank had a curling free kick, tipped over the bar minutes before half time.

Hazlehead scored two goals within the first fifteen minutes of the second half, the first a curling free kick round the wall.

The second goal came down the right hand side, a good one-two put the forward inside the box who subsequently fired past Geddes.

Ewen was substituted for Bruce after an eight week absence, and he made an immediate impact, running at the defence causing them all sorts of problems.

On 70 minutes Bruce’s low drive came thundering off the far post. The Phins won a corner and ALLAN fired home from inside the 6 yard box.

Brown should have scored shortly after when Bruce fired a ball across the box to the unmarked winger and with all the time in the world, he still screwed his effort wide 7 yards out.

On 80 minutes Bruce again was put through on goal however a defender bundled him down before he pulled the trigger. The referee pointed to the spot and BRUCE converted the spot kick himself.

Hazlehead put any chance of a comeback to rest when they made it 4–2. Torphins were caught sleeping as a forward came in unmarked to slide the ball past Geddes.
